Town Meeting Warrants

Introduction to Town Meeting

Upton's Annual Town Meeting is held on the first Thursday in May of each year, beginning at 7 pm. The Board of Selectmen also generally call two special town meetings for other business that arises during the year, one in the fall and another in the spring. Boards and Committees are given notice of the meetings to be held, and may submit articles to be considered by the Board of Selectmen, using the attached form. The warrant is prepared by the Town Manager and voted on by the Board of Selectmen. It is then filed with the Town Clerk and posted in several locations in Town in accordance with the Town's General By-Laws. Residents who have questions about the warrant are welcome to call the Town Manager.

Residents may petition the Town to include articles on the warrant in accordance with Massachusetts State Law. Residents wishing to submit a petition article must obtain a petition form from the Town Clerk and submit the article with the number of signatures required for the type of meeting to be held. The petition must be turned in prior to the date set by the Selectmen to close the warrant. Those are:

  • Annual Town Meeting: 10 signatures
  • Special Town Meeting that has already been called by the Selectmen: 100 signatures
  • Special Town Meeting that has not been called: 200 signatures

Petition articles are included on the warrant exactly as they are provided by the petitioner.
